We are now in day 2 of our Dan Barham photo clinic and wow - lots of photos! Under Dan’s tutelage, our photographers in-training have been out riding and shooting all day and night. We are taking full advantage of our summer solstice midnight sun! Tonight the crew left at 8.30pm to climb the local Grey Mountain to capture the shooting possibilities during our long ‘golden light’ period. Tomorrow morning will be spend with coffees in hand and learning the tricks of the trade for processing and editing photo shoots.
It has been a fantastic few days. Tomorrow night the crew will be shooting the local mountain bike club’s twoonie race so they can capture the feeling of shooting while under pressure!
Great times and we are looking forward to seeing the final slide show!
The 3rd annual CMBC mountain bike season kick off race, Boogaloo to Boréale, is set for Friday, May 27! Registration starts at 6.30pm at Magnassun parking lot on Grey Mountain road. The race starts at 7pm and costs $10 for CMBC members. If you are not yet a member, you may register at 6.30pm. The race finishes at Boréale’s yurtville on Long Lake Road.
In addition to the usual race course over Boogaloo trails, we have added a fun, short course for the non-racers that love to mountain bike. Same start time and place. Come on out and have a fun Friday night pedal!
At the finish line we’ve lined up a great band to help you dance away any early season mtb aches and a Yukon Brewing beer garden to quench your thirst. Race fee includes a BBQ for all participants in the race/fun course. This is an outdoor event, so please be sure to pack after-ride clothes. An entire suit of fleece is COMPLETELY acceptable at yurtville!
Come on out; meet new friends and hit the trails with old riding buddies! Shoot us an email if you have any questions about the night.
Let’s ride!
For the last 4 years, the first week of May has always been a benchmark for us. It is time to set up Yurtville for another season! Load after load of stairs, floors, tools, platforms, yurt poles, walls and even the showers, all make their way down the familiar road to our property.
Each year we set up and take down our entire yurt village. When we arrive on site that first week of May, there aren’t any signs that a super fun mountain bike vacation retreat exists on this site! Bit by bit, truck load by truck load, yurtville starts to appear. It is with immense help from our local community of riders and friends that make it possible each year. It is definitely a big job, but we are reminded it is all worth it when we sitting in our hammocks, enjoying the view.
As a heads up, on Friday, May 27 is our 3rd annual Boogaloo to Boréale mountain bike race! There will be two live rock bands, beer gardens, race course and fun course. Come on out to the mountain bike social event of the season! More details to come soon.
Enjoy your weekend!
We are freshly back in the Yukon from a great little bike show called , in Portland, Oregon. Often called Bike City, USA, Portland did not disappoint! From seeing bicycles everywhere and under all sorts of society members to bicycle themed restaurants and breweries. It is a great city to embrace the world of cycling!
We have drawn our final Yukon riding trip prize. Bruce from Seattle has won a Weekender trip for two! It was great to talk to so many people and introduce them to this crazy, fun place called the Yukon! While we did have a blast at the shows, it is definitely time to stop TALKING about riding bikes and actually get out and RIDE our bikes! Melt snow melt!
It is around this time that we receive a lot of emails and phone calls from future clients. They have already been convinced the riding looks spectacular. Our photo album is full of fantastic images from Dan Barham Photography; he does a fabulous job of capturing the Yukon uniqueness! They have almost decided to take a mountain biking vacation here and are looking for that last nugget of ‘wow’ that solidifies their decision.
The questions we receive are targeted towards Yukoners; the culture; the place. The Yukon is a relatively unknown gem in the tourism world. What is known is the wilderness and beauty. A little less known are the great coffee shops, award winning micro craft beer, nationally acclaimed music festivals and tonnes of little businesses that help make our Yukon lifestyles sparkle.
What can you expect to see on a typical summer day? People playing beach volley ball in the downtown riverside park at 11 p.m.. Buskers on Main Street. Free live music performances every work day lunch hour. The great mid-day mob known as government workers lining up at the burrito truck to buy the best burritos in the North. People walking, running, biking - not really many rollerbladers though. That never really seemed to take off up here. Basically we see a culture of people that love living here and that is pretty awesome!
One of common comments we hear on the way to the airport drop off is: I never really expected Whitehorse to be like that. We just smile knowingly at them. Life is good up here!
We have just returned from our spring tour of BC, Washington and Oregon, talking bikes and the Yukon with a lot of new faces! We estimate we spoke with approximately 600 people over the course of 2 weeks. No wonder we both lost our voices!
On Thursday evening we drew the winner of our Canadian promotion draw: a trip for two on our Summer Solstice trip! James B. from Vancouver is the lucky winner who will be playing in under the midnight sun this coming June! The best part is, we met him at the Vancouver Outdoor Show. He stopped by our booth and was admiring the Yukon riding photos from Dan Barham Photography!
We have one more show to go on this 2011 tour. Up next is the Pedal Nation Bike Show in Portland, Oregon. The land of bikes, great food and amazing brews! Three items we hold near and dear to our hearts!
Well, if you live in a place where the dirt trails are open, please go for a ride for us!
